If at first you don’t succeed….. try, try again. For a story on people who
have been divorced multiple times.

This was a solid concept with great, funny execution. It didn’t need a headline
to understand.   Nice composition and clever way to illustrate a complex
topic.

Second Place – Tom Smart/Deseret Morning News
Angela Dumke, photo illustration documenting one year of breast cancer
survival.

Visually, this is a very elegant and unique way to approach breast cancer.
The use of black and white instead of color was a good choice to make the
nakedness of the subject less of a focus point and her condition more apparent.   One
staff member commented that "This makes a horrible disease beautiful.

Third Place – Francisco Kjolseth/Salt Lake Tribune

iPod troubles and what to do about them.

Out of the many iPod illustrations that have been created, this was unique.   It
reads quickly and got some chuckles right away.   Very clever and
topical.   A little rubber cement-fueled flames wouldn’t have hurt,
but, hey, fire makes anything more interesting!

was a great concept and choice of perspective for an illustration about
the spread of viral video on the Internet. The complexity and attention
to detail in this illustration pushed this to the top of the group.

This is a simple idea that works very well. Great expression on the subject,
the many hands and the streams of liquid are were executed well.

Another great concept for the story about living and thinking green for
the protection of the environment. I like the mood and the feeling of
this image.

This was a clever idea to use the shadow of a cross from the goal post for the
religious symbolism.

Good use of the whole frame with the twisting and encircling filmstrip.
The expression and ticket stubs were a great feature of this illustration.

1st — Dog Love – Francisco Kjolseth, The Salt Lake Tribune

Humor and excess are a two punch combination in this illustration. Though the lighting could have been better, the clownish color and humanization of the pet put this one over the top.

2nd – Insomnia – Francisco Kjolseth, The Salt Lake Tribune

The photographer pulled off a nice dream-like quality: soothing but quirky. A little more mood and this might have been a winner.

3rd — Punk Rock – Trent Nelson, The Salt Lake Tribune

There were several well done collage-like illustrations in this category, but this was the only one that added content by providing the reader with different perspectives that blended well together.

4th — School Testing – Jason Olson, Deseret News

Simplifying this illustration might have helped it move up the ranks, but it was a good concept for a much trickier story than some of the other winners. A for effort.

1: Eli Lucero, Herald-Journal Marriage Ill – This is a clean execution and it effectively communicates the concept.

2: Francisco Kjolseth, Salt Lake Tribune Endangered Minds – There is a lot of borrowed interest in this image, but it is still an interesting visual.

3: Troy Boman, Transcript-Bulletin Checkers – Very interesting graphic and statement. I like the hints of background information.

HM: Robert Casey, Freelance for The Ensign Scripture Before – Interesting visual and execution, but not very effective in communicating the concept.

FIRST: JOHN STOCKTON • Trent Nelson •

I liked the unusual concept, and the fact that it was executed very well, and despite being complicated it draws the
viewer in for quite a while and holds interest, even if one had very little interest in the subject matter. ( I’ve always
liked to watch John Stockton play). Great idea.

SECOND: RADIOS • Francisco Kjolseth •

This was a clean, well crafted illustration, nicely designed. I liked the choice of props and the fact that it illustrated
the story line well.

THIRD: WATERING IN THE DESERT: • Francisco Kjolseth •

The element of humor bumped this illustration into the top contenders. The minimal use of competing design
elements gave it instant impact.

HONORABLE MENTION: SYMPHONY INJURIES • Francisco Kjolseth •

This illustration stood out as being vastly different from the rest of the entries, and I like the selective toning and
subtle attempt to tell the story.

In second place was Illustration 02. Francisco Kjolseth The was a good feeling of all the parts of the illustration rolling through the process and into the viewers lap. There was humor, but not at the expense of what appears to be an informative story about real life technical developments. I think the lighting and technical quality of each element in the picture elevated this illustration above many of the other entries. I have a feeling that this illustration probably influenced readers to stop and check out the story.

In third place was Illustration 09. Leah Hogsten I liked the choice of a strong background light that helped the shape of the cherry stand out from what could have been a very dark red illustration with no seperation. Using selective focus also helps the eye know where to look for the imprtant detail of the illustration.

In fourth place was Illustration 10. Francisco Kjolseth Racing barbeque grills was a humurous way of dealing with the subject of coal vs gas grills. The element that set this illustration above the reaming entries was the attention to detail when putting it together. The cartoon style flame on the lighter was a good choice, instead of just using a real flame from the lighter.
