: Outside the Democratic National Convention, members of Iraq War Veterans Against the War line up and raise their arms in an emotional farewell and thanks directed to a crowd who had been marching and protesting alongside them all day in Denver, Colorado, on Wednesday, August 27, 2008. After a long day of marching for miles to the convention site, the Pepsi Center, protesters finally got the Obama Campaign to agree to pass on a letter from the Iraq War Veterans Against the War to Barack Obama.

The family used to live on a farmhouse in the same location, but in the fall of 2007, it burned down. The owner of the land gave the patriarch of the household a trailer so he could continue plowing the fields for him.

: Children have a water gun fight in the new park and playground in the small gas boomtown of Wamsutter, Wyoming, on Wednesday, September 17, 2008. Town officials and residents had gathered earlier for a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new park that was largely funded by the oil and gas company British Petroleum. Before the opening of the park, the children of Wamsutter had very few options to pass the time. Over the past eight years, gas companies have flocked to the vast deposits of natural gas in the desert surrounding Wamsutter, Wyoming. Today, this small, dusty town, situated amidst a stark landscape of sagebrush and parched earth, is booming. The roughnecks and townspeople work tirelessly, struggling to build a good life and community for their families. Yet, with the city’s history of booms and busts, for many residents the realization of a permanent community has remained elusive. But, slowly there have been signs Ð like the opening of the park Ð that community unity, if not economic prosperity, is on the way for Wamsutter.

: Jim Hughes, 50, of Oklahoma is photographed in his tiny, modest trailer in the small gas boomtown of Wamsutter, Wyoming, on Friday, February 29, 2008. He lives off of 650 dollars a month from Social Security. In the late 90s, when he was hopping trains through Arizona, he was badly beaten, almost to death, by a gang of criminals. He had to have life-saving brain surgery. Now, as both Jim and his sister, Karla, say, he’s “not stupid, just slow.” He is a very giving man who feels like sometimes people tend to take advantage of him. He has two daughters whom he tries to visit whenever he can. He does a lot of freelance highway accident towing and odd jobs around town to get by. He feels like something has been robbed from his life because of his injury but he refuses to give up in. He spends most of his time with Blackjack, his dog.

: “Winter & Care” When she was a baby, Winter Burpee, now 10, was shaken by her father. Suffering from Shaken Baby Syndrome, she cannot speak or walk and has had several brain and intestine surgeries. Her mother, Care, left her husband, remarried, and now raises Winter and her five other children. : “Last Mission/Last Hour” In the early morning of October 20, 2006, six days before his 21st birthday, the Humvee Iraqi translator Diyar al-Bayati was riding in during a routine patrol came under attack by a roadside bomb and an ambush. On his last mission and his last hour as a translator before moving to Kuwait for a safer translating job, Diyar lost both of his legs and had his right arm horribly maimed. On April 11, 2008, after a year and half of recovery and over 70 surgeries in Baghdad and Amman, Jordan, Diyar arrived in Salt Lake City as a refugee. Now, he spends his days waking up late (if he sleeps at all), barely eating, running errands, being taken around to different medical appointments, watching movies, and using the Internet to talk with friends and family. Despite DiyarÕs intense drive, intelligence, self-reliance, and positive attitude about his new life, he can never go back home and his life will never be normal. A towel cools Diyar’s forehead as he experiences a very high fever as he recovers after a long surgery on his right arm at the University of Utah Hospital. What was supposed to only be a one night of recovery, turned into a very long stay. He had to be transferred to the main hospital from the Orthopedic Center when he had complications resulting from an infection. The surgery had spread rare bacteria common to the Middle East called Klebsiella that had been dormant in his right arm.

: Diyar looks at his old prosthetic legs he received while in the hospital in Amman, Jordan during a session with prosthetics at Fit Well, a prosthetic specialty center in Salt Lake City. Diyar’s hope is to, as soon as possible, receive the most advanced and lightest prosthetic legs through his insurer, AIG. Specialists have told him he needs to strengthen his maimed right arm with further surgeries before receiving the legs.

: Diyar leaves his apartment to be driven by his caseworker Debi Clark to downtown Salt Lake City for a radio interview with a local NPR affiliate. Only a few weeks after arriving in Utah, local and national press began showing interest in DiyarÕs story and Diyar welcomed it.

: Diyar smokes from a hookah for the first time since arriving in Utah at a Lebanese restaurant in downtown Salt Lake City. Mostly done settling in, swimming through all the red tape, and finished with most work on his right arm, Diyar was in high spirits. He was eager to move on and possibly move to Maryland to be with his girlfriend. His plan was to live with her and her brother and later marry her. Things did not work out with their relationship. His plans changed to focusing on getting his green card, visiting his family in Syria or United Arab Emirates, and eventually, once a citizen, bringing them over to the U.S.

: Debi, Diyar’s caseworker, helps him leave the bathroom right before he went in for a major four hour surgery on his right arm at the University of Utah Orthopedic Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Anesthesiologists Jeff Swenson and Karl Hurst-Wicker, right, wait for Diyar to come out so they can prepare him to go into the surgery. Diyar was late for the surgery and had to be rushed from the airport after visiting his girlfriend in Baltimore, Maryland.

: Diyar shouts in pain as nurses lift his arm to check how it is healing as he recovers from his right arm surgery at the University of Utah Hospital. Diyar had been promised a short stay after the surgery, but the surgery had spread rare bacteria common to the Middle East called Klebsiella that had been dormant in his right arm. Diyar ended up spending about two weeks in the hospital.

: For the third time in two days, Diyar leaves the Aspen Ridge rehab center and takes an ambulance to a hospital, complaining of severe chest pain and difficulty breathing. In a bare patient intake room at the University of Utah Hospital, Diyar waits to see a doctor. After waiting for a long time, doctors meet him to tell him that he is experiencing complications from his new antibiotic medication. The previous day, at a different hospital, Diyar refused to go back to the rehab center and angrily demanded that he be taken to his apartment against orders by his doctor.

: Diyar waits on a couch in his living room for a freelance videographer for MTV to interview him for a pre-election package he was working on concerning the state of medical care in the U.S. Diyar has a bed, but he prefers to sleep out in the living room where he spends all of his time when he is home.

: Diyar receives a used electronic wheelchair from Bob Sorbonne of Cottonwood Heights, Utah. Bob read about Diyar in an article published in the Salt Lake Tribune. He decided to donate the wheelchair, an extra one that his handicapped sister no longer needed. BobÕs own son has served two tours of duty in Iraq.

: Diyar leaves his apartment to be driven by his caseworker Debi Clark to downtown Salt Lake City for a radio interview with a local NPR affiliate. Only a few weeks after arriving in Utah, local and national press began showing interest in Diyar’s story and Diyar welcomed it.

: Diyar smokes from a hookah for the first time since arriving in Utah at a Lebanese restaurant in downtown Salt Lake City. Mostly done settling in, swimming through all the red tape, and finished with most work on his right arm, Diyar was in high spirits. He was eager to move on and possibly move to Maryland to be with his girlfriend. His plan was to live with her and her brother and later marry her. Things did not work out with their relationship. His plans changed to focusing on getting his green card, visiting his family in Syria or United Arab Emirates, and eventually, once a citizen, bringing them over to the U.S.

: Debi, DiyarÕs caseworker, helps him leave the bathroom right before he went in for a major four hour surgery on his right arm at the University of Utah Orthopedic Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Anesthesiologists Jeff Swenson and Karl Hurst-Wicker, right, wait for Diyar to come out so they can prepare him to go into the surgery. Diyar was late for the surgery and had to be rushed from the airport after visiting his girlfriend in Baltimore, Maryland.

: Diyar shouts in pain as nurses lift his arm to check how it is healing as he recovers from his right arm surgery at the University of Utah Hospital. Diyar had been promised a short stay after the surgery, but the surgery had spread rare bacteria common to the Middle East called Klebsiella that had been dormant in his right arm. Diyar ended up spending about two weeks in the hospital.

: For the third time in two days, Diyar leaves the Aspen Ridge rehab center and takes an ambulance to a hospital, complaining of severe chest pain and difficulty breathing. In a bare patient intake room at the University of Utah Hospital, Diyar waits to see a doctor. After waiting for a long time, doctors meet him to tell him that he is experiencing complications from his new antibiotic medication. The previous day, at a different hospital, Diyar refused to go back to the rehab center and angrily demanded that he be taken to his apartment against orders by his doctor.

: Diyar waits on a couch in his living room for a freelance videographer for MTV to interview him for a pre-election package he was working on concerning the state of medical care in the U.S. Diyar has a bed, but he prefers to sleep out in the living room where he spends all of his time when he is home.

: At a hair salon in Salt Lake City, Elizabeth Trujillo gives Diyar a haircut.

: Diyar visits the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City.

: Diyar receives a used electronic wheelchair from Bob Sorbonne of Cottonwood Heights, Utah. Bob read about Diyar in an article published in the Salt Lake Tribune. He decided to donate the wheelchair, an extra one that his handicapped sister no longer needed. Bob’s own son has served two tours of duty in Iraq.

: Eldorado, Texas – In April 2008, Child Protective Services (CPS) raided a polygamous sect’s Texas ranch and removed 416 children after receiving phone calls, now believed to be a hoax, from someone claiming to be an abused sixteen-year-old girl. This raid on the FLDS Church’s YFZ (Yearning for Zion) Ranch became the largest child custody case in United States history. Here, on the first night of removals, young FLDS women and children are taken into shelter at the First Baptist Church in Eldorado, Texas.

: Eldorado, Texas – As law enforcement officials fearing a Waco-type incident prepare to breach the polygamous sect’s temple at the YFZ Ranch, Texas State Troopers speed through a roadblock, en route to reinforce the assault which would meet with only minimal non-violent resistance.

: Eldorado, Texas – After removing nearly 500 women and children from the polygamous sect’s YFZ Ranch, local law enforcement officials and the FBI breached the bolted doors to the polygamous sect’s temple, producing thousands of boxes of evidence to be sifted through in a search for proof of sexual abuse and underage marriage.

: Eldorado, Texas – In justifying the removal nearly 500 women and children from the YFZ Ranch, Marleigh Meisner, spokesperson for Texas Child Protective Services, expressed the agency’s concerned opinion that the FLDS culture was one of abuse which raised young girls to be married off to older men and young boys to become sexual predators.

: San Angelo, Texas – Janet, an FLDS matriarch, tearfully embraces young girls as they arrive at the old historic Fort Concho, where nearly 500 FLDS women and children would be temporarily sheltered in primitive buildings such as former horse barns. The large amount of people that Texas Child Protective Services called victims overwhelmed the state’s foster care system.

: San Angelo, Texas – Young FLDS women gather behind a fence at Fort Concho, waving to other FLDS women in another building out of view. Texas Child Protective Services and Texas State Troopers made every effort to keep the nearly 500 women and children in custody out of view, going so far as to confiscate cel phones and other electronic devices.

: San Angelo, Texas – A group of FLDS boys run from journalists at Fort Concho after being ordered away by Texas Child Protective Services officials. Soon CPS would separate the mothers from their children and spread the children throughout the state into foster care.

: Eldorado, Texas – Back on the YFZ Ranch for the first time since the raid began ten days earlier, Marie Musser, an FLDS mother of three, clings to a post for support while telling the story of CPS taking her three children from her away earlier that day. For a secretive group that had long kept the outside world at a distance, the thought of their children living in the modern world among outsiders and without their parents had become a painful reality.

: San Angelo, Texas – Hundred of attorneys, officials, and FLDS members lined up to get through security and into the Tom Green County Courthouse for the initial 14-day hearing to decide the fate of the 416 children removed in the raid on the FLDS Church’s YFZ Ranch. As each child and parent were entitled to a state-appointed attorney, the hearing was quickly bogged down with objections from dozens of attorneys. After two long days of hearings, including twenty-one hours of testimony, Judge Barbara Walther ruled that CPS could keep the FLDS children in foster care until at least the next hearing, scheduled for two months after the raid began.

: San Angelo, Texas – FLDS member Dan Jessop and his wife Louisa Bradshaw wade through media cameras as they leave the Tom Green County Courthouse after a custody hearing on the status of their newborn son. CPS had refused proof that Bradshaw was an adult until her child was born in state custody, at which point they sought to take custody of the newborn. Bradshaw did her case no good by refusing to answer such seemingly simple questions as who attended her wedding and who else lived in her home.

: Eldorado, Texas – Nearly two months after 416 FLDS children had been removed from the polygamous sect’s YFZ Ranch, the Texas Supreme Court ruled that CPS must return the children due to a lack of evidence. Having spent two months in a shelter, Edson Jessop’s young sons Zachery, Ephraim and Russell Jessop wanted nothing more than to see an end to the persistent media coverage and return to their quiet family life on the ranch.

: Eldorado, Texas – FLDS member Sarah Draper waits to testify to a grand jury at the Schleicher County Courthouse. Though CPS was forced to return over four-hundred FLDS children to their parents, evidence seized in the raid led to grand jury hearings that resulted in sexual abuse and underage marriage charges being filed against several FLDS men including the polygamous sect’s imprisoned leader Warren Jeffs. The men are currently awaiting trial.

Sagers would go on to dust himself off and win the bareback event the same day.

: Actors in the musical play, “Corinne, The Gentile City” wait on the city park grass of their rural town during rehearsals. The play is a comedic portrayal of the controversial non-Mormon roots of Corrine.

: Psychologist Teodora Racoveanu from St. Andrew’s orphanage in Iasi, Romania gives Marius Dasianu a hug after a long day spent organizing funds and logistics for surgeries. Marius was severely burned in a house fire in his home in Romania that claimed the life of his parents. Racoveanu is using up her vacation time from her job to accompany Marius and his brother Ionut (who was abroad at the time of the fire) here to America where students from Brigham Young University in Provo have organized to get Marius the medical care he needs. August 27, 2008.

: Models and students wait nervously backstage while they wait to compete in the Cameo College Hair Competition at Murray High School. The competition which actually began over two months ago culminates with the final showing at the high school. Students have been tasked with creating a unique and creative style package for their models for the competition.

: In order to get a better look at the baby cows at the YFZ Ranch located outside Eldorado, Texas, 4 year old Anne Jessop stands on the bed of her fathers truck. According to her mother Zavenda Jessop, Anne’s transition from the raid, to the foster home and back to the ranch has been not been easy for her or her three brothers who were also placed in state custody following the raid by Texas state officials that took over 400 FLDS (Fundamentalist Latter-day Saint) children into state custody in April of 2008. What ensued was the largest child custody case in U.S. history

This meal, is called an Iftar, which is an Arabic word meaning the evening meal after sunset. During the month of Ramadan, which is based off of the lunar calender, Muslims across the globe abstain from food or water from sunrise to sunset. This is seen as a sacrifice and opportunity for Muslims to self examine and purify not only their actions but their thoughts and desires as well.

: “A Year in America” SUMMARY: In October of 2007, the Al-Baldawi family arrived in Utah. After working as a translator for the United States in Iraq, Falah Al-Baldawi had little choice but to flee from the death threats against him, his wife Adhraa, and their three daughters, Luma, 12, Rafal , 7, and Noor, 5. The family sold all of their belongings and boarded a plane for a new and unfamiliar life. With the help of the Swanson Family Foundation, Falah found employment, financial support, and housing in Pleasant View, Utah. The girls were placed in an elementary school where they endured the frustrating experience of communicating with their teachers and classmates. Over the course of a year, the family began to adjust to their new home, learn about life in America, and create ties within the Iraqi refugee community in Salt Lake City. The family’s desire to assimilate has been mixed with a longing for their own culture. While they are eager to become Americans and have adapted to and absorbed much of the American culture, they say, that in their hearts, they will always be Iraqi. : After moving with her family into their new mobile home, Rafal Al-Baldawi, 7, sits on her donated bed and stares out of the window of her room. In order to help with the costs of resettling, the Swanson Family Foundation of Ogden helped them to find a home, paid their rent, and provided food, furniture and clothing.

: After arriving home from work, Falah joins his family on the floor of their living room to eat a traditional Iraqi dinner. Eating on the floor is one tradition that they held on to.

: Unable to speak much English, Adhraa points in the direction of her home after a neighbor stopped to ask her where her family was living. Adhraa has struggled with the language barrier and homesickness. “Of course I feel bored and uncomfortable when I can’t talk to people in English,” she said in Arabic, a month after arriving in Utah. “When I talk to them they just look at me and don’t understand anything.”

: Falah takes a break from work as he sits on an old freezer at the Weber County Transfer Station in Ogden, Utah. Although Falah is grateful to be employed, he is embarrassed to be working at a recycling center and doing manual labor. In Iraq, he imagined that there would be thousands of jobs available for him in America. The reality of the job market, though, has surprised him, as he has struggled to find meaningful employment. “I have to improve my situation little by little. … I have to begin from the bottom, from the zero, as they say.”

Pullman, her partner Charles Brown and their three children, spent several months at a homeless shelter in Ogden, Utah, after losing their home to foreclosure. The family found a home in November 2008, and Charles Brown started work at a local factory. But Pullman’s mental illness and an emotional disconnect among the family members make it hard to deal with life for them and they hope they won’t lose their home again. “The struggle isn’t over,” Charles Brown said. “This is just the beginning.” Because of the economic crisis, more and more families have flocked homeless shelters in Utah.
